Hi-Pointe Theatre closing and reopening

If you want to see a movie at the Hi-Pointe, you better go tonight. The bar of the same name closed in 2006 and it looks like the theater is about to meet the same fate. When the screen goes dark after the 9:15pm showing of Run Fatboy Run, Landmark Theatres will be closing up shop on the historic theater.

According to Landmark’s website, this one screen theater was built in 1922 and has been operated by Landmark since 2002. ” It is St. Louis’s oldest continuously operating cinema. Built in 1922, the Hi-Pointe is located on the corner of McCausland and Skinker. Unlike many of the other single-screen theatres in the area that were originally built to be vaudeville theatres, the Hi-Pointe was always intended to show film. Over the past 80 years, the theatre has been through several renovations. The classic turquoise seats, a big favorite of movie-goers, were added in 1963. In the past few years, the Hi-Pointe was outfitted with Dolby Digital Sound, new carpeting and a new speaker system.”

With the closure of the Hi-Pointe, St. Louis City will soon be left with only 2 theaters: the Moolah and the Chase. Rumors, however, suggest that this might just be a temporary closure. Landmark Theatres, who also operates the Tivoli and Plaza Frontenac theaters, seems to be out, but a new operator is being sought. Hopefully its a quick search. It would be nice to have someone new come in and spruce up the place a bit.

EDIT: Joe Williams of the Post Dispatch is now claiming that the theater is closing down, but that it will reopen under new management soon. Very good news.
