KWMU to Grand Center

<?php the_title(); } ?>

As an UMSL (University of Missouri – St. Louis for those not into acronyms) alumni, I have had plenty of exposure to St. Louis’ local NPR affiliate, KWMU. I always found it somewhat cool, yet somewhat odd that the station was based out of the campus. Especially the fact that it is run out of the basement in Lucas Hall. But all that’s about to change.

In a rather surprising turn, KWMU has announced that they will be moving their broadcast facilities to Grand Center in Midtown. This had been rumored for months, but just recently was verified. Their new $12 million, 27,000 sq ft home will be located at 3651 Olive Street. Apparently the space will also be used as  UMSL academic facilities to give the university a presence in the area. Something which other schools such as Webster and Lindenwood, and of course SLU and WashU have already done. The facility will be near the planned new home KETC (Channel 9) at 3655 Olive St.

At this point, approximately half of the funds needed for the project are in place. The rest will need to be raised from donations and other sources. No word yet on a construction date, but I assume everything will dependent on their ability to raise funds. For more on the move, here is a good UMSL internal document on the matter.

With more and more art, entertainment and educational institutions putting up shop in the area, Grand Center looks to be an increasing attractive area. Hopefully projects like the Art House will find success with these and other neighboring development.

    Matt Kastner you are an alumnus not an alumni of UMSL. Alumni is the plural and not the singular version.

  2. In KC, StL, Rolla, and Columbia (IOW, wherever there’s a UM campus) the NPR station for that area is associated with the campus. I knew about UMSL and MS&T, and quite easily Googled the other two.
