Update on activity in FPSE

June 19, 2008

I got a chance to drive by a few ongoing projects in the St. Louis City neighborhood of Forest Park Southeast (or “The Grove” if you prefer) recently and it looks like things are moving along nicely. What surprised me was that a stumbled across yet another large project that I hadn’t heard about. Then, just this morning, I got word that Commerce Bank is looking for proposals for a potential development at Vandeventer and Manchester. When it rains it pours. Read more

St. Louis City homicides

June 18, 2008

If you’ve ever been curious about where and when murders have been taking place in St. Louis City, the Post Dispatch has just made your wish come true. They just posted a map with all the murders in the City over the past three and a half years. The map can be personalized to show murders in only certain years. Read more

Mattingly Brewing Co. opens

June 5, 2008

A couple of months ago I posted about a pair of upcoming microbreweries opening this June in the Benton Park neighborhood of South St. Louis. I happy to say the the first of the pair, Mattingly Brewing Co, finally opened last week. I had a chance to take a look at the finished product and sample some of the food this afternoon. From what I have seen so far, things are looking promising. Read more

Mississippi River Bridge design

May 31, 2008

If you have been following this blog over the past few months, you know how important I believe the new Interstate 70 bridge connecting Missouri and Illinois in Downtown St. Louis is. As the region goes, so goes the City, and the future of Highway 70 is very important to us all. I have had my misgivings over the arrangements made in February, but on the whole I think the planned Mississippi River Bridge will be a huge step for the region. Read more

Lofts in Fox Park’s future?

May 29, 2008

Fox Park is one of those South St. Louis neighborhoods in the midst of a transition. Unfortunately, like surrounding neighborhoods such as Benton Park West and Tower Grove East, the current downturn in the market has stalled the progress of redevelopment in the area. But all I see when I pass through the area is the untapped potential. Read more

The Stable microbrewery

May 6, 2008

About a month ago I posted about a couple of microbreweries coming to the Benton Park Neighborhood of St. Louis in the coming months: Mattingly Brewing Company and the Stable. Info has been scarce on the Stable until I got a email from a reader a couple weeks back. Thanks to that contact, I had the opportunity to tour the facility this morning and chat with one of the owners. I’m happy to say that the project is coming along great and that they are on track for a June opening. Read more

Ice cream on South Grand

May 5, 2008

The former location of the florist shop Kabloom, at the intersection of Grand and Arsenal at 3101 South Grand, is about to take on a new tenant: Emack & Bolio’s. What in the world is Emack & Bolio’s you ask? Apparently, it is a Boston-based ice cream chain. Most of their locations appear to be in Massachusetts, but they have a few others scattered throughout the country including one in Springfield, Missouri. No word on when it’s set to open. Read more

More businesses on Morganford

May 4, 2008

Morganford Avenue, in the St. Louis neighborhood of Tower Grove South, has seen a lot of new business activity in recent years. The Tin Can, Stella Blues, Three Monkees, Grove Furnishings, and the Vintage Haberdashery come to mind. But as strong as the current business roster might be, things are about to get more interesting. Read more

Cinco de Mayo on Cherokee

April 30, 2008

The tradition continues. Its not as glamorous as Mardi Gras or St. Patrick’s Day, but Cinco de Mayo holds its own. If you’re looking for an “authentic” Cinco de Mayo celebration instead of hitting up your local Chevy’s, you might want ot head down to Cherokee Street in the South St. Louis neighborhood of Benton Park West this weekend (May 3, 2008). Seeing as the celebration actually takes place on the 3rd of May, its not really a true Cinco de Mayo party, but its the spirit of the event that counts. Read more

Tower Grove East condos

April 29, 2008

This project has been under development for a while now, but it’s good to see that the condos on the southeast corner of Sidney & Nebraska are coming along. Located in a former Phillips 66 auto repair shop at 2600 Nebraska in the Tower Grove East neighborhood of South St. Louis, these condos will be a welcome addition to the landscape. I don’t know much about the project at this point other than that the condos are said to be “loft” style. Read more
